Existing social norms marketing campaign: “Practice Safe, Eighty-six”

Since 2004 CSU has been implementing a social norms marketing campaign—“practice safe, eighty-six”—to reduce misperceptions about alcohol use and to increase responsible use, specifically the use of designated drivers. Following are the changes in perceptions and behaviors that have occurred on the CSU campus as measured by the NCHA. The 2003 survey was administered prior to the implementation of the campaign, and the campaign has been ongoing for that past three years from 2004 to 2007.

CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR
The proportion of CSU students who “usually or always” use a designated driver when partying or going out rose from 86% in 2003 to 89% in 2007.
